Ronald McDonald House Charities – Our Stories
Elouise
" In March 2022, baby girl Elouise, affectionately known as Lou, came into the world. Lou’s parents, Stephanie and Spencer, started their parenthood journey like any other couple. However, their lives took an unexpected turn when Lou fell ill with COVID-19 a few months after her birth.Lou’s condition worsened, leading to sepsis, and she ended up in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unite at McMaster Children’s Hospital. After numerous tests, and many scares, Lou was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called HLH.
Lou’s treatment required a bone marrow transplant and Lou was transferred to SickKids. The treatment plan involved chemotherapy to suppress Lou’s existing immune system, followed by the transplantation of donor cells. The family stayed at RMHC Toronto for 70 days while being monitored by the SickKids team."

Jayden
"In September of 2021, Jayden was diagnosed with Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT), meaning he can have episodes of an irregularly fast heartbeat. While this is usually a diagnosis that can be well controlled with medication, normal treatment wasn’t working and, after multiple trips to their local doctor and emergency room, Jayden was admitted to the Cardiology Unit at SickKids Hospital.Jayden’s parents stayed at the House for 15 days in July of 2022 and an additional 13 days at the end of August when his condition became even more difficult to manage.
Even while on the strongest medications, Jayden was still experiencing episodes, so his doctors decided the best treatment would be for him to undergo surgery for a cardiac ablation to try and restore a regular heartbeat. In October of 2022, the whole family packed their bags for a 20-day stay at RMHC Toronto to be there for Jayden during his surgery."

Samuel
"When Renée and Thierry visited the nursery to take their newborn son home in 2020, they received a shock. Nurses had given baby Samuel an emergency IV and put him on oxygen because he had failed a newborn screening test.Suddenly, the new parents found themselves travelling nearly 1,000 kilometres from their home in Hearst, Ont., to SickKids Hospital in Toronto. Samuel and his mother were airlifted, while dad Thierry had to make his own way down to Toronto.
In Toronto, doctors diagnosed Samuel with a rare and complex heart defect. For several nights, Renée and Thierry slept in the Ronald McDonald Family Room at SickKids until they were able to receive a room at RMHC Toronto’s House. There, the family could wait together for Sammie to grow enough to undergo surgery. Almost two years later, Sammie’s family found themselves back at RMHC Toronto when he required another surgery."
