Don Hoekstra is a lifelong water quality professional and started his career at the Hinsdale (IL) Sanitary District wastewater plant as an operator at the age of 19. He completed his undergrad education in environmental science while working in progressively more responsible roles in operations of both wastewater treatment plants and public water supply treatment and distribution.
After a decade in operations he embarked on a new path in the emerging residuals and biosolids management business. In addition to establishing biosolids beneficial use programs through agricultural land application, the companies expanded to provide a variety of “in plant” services such as thickening, dewatering, digester and tank cleaning, and lagoon remediation. Equipment was optimized and modified for these purposes, and skills developed for the effective and safe removal and appropriate utilization of a wide variety of organics. Don has been involved in advanced biosolids processing through establishing composting operations and the production of biosolids based fertilizer products through several processes.
He is a life member of the Water Environment Federation, a founding member of the residuals and biosolids committee at the Water Environment Association of Ontario, and has been a frequent speaker and contributor to conferences and seminars. He also serves on the Board of Water For People-Canada.

As part of our Annual Conference and Trade Show, we strive to organize tours that showcase innovation in the water and wastewater industry. We are pleased to announce that for our 2019 conference we will be visiting the Ravensview Wastewater Treatment Facility with Utilities Kingston and Spearhead Brewing Company.
Ravensview WWTF is a world-class facility is one of North America’s most environmentally progressive and responsible wastewater treatment plants, and the largest of its kind in Canada.
A lot can happen in six hours! That’s how long it takes for wastewater to flow through the Ravensview Wastewater Treatment Facility. During those short few hours, the waste undergoes an astounding chemical, physical, and biological transformation to produce three beneficial outputs:
- Natural resource quality water that’s safely returned to the St. Lawrence River
- Approximately 25 per cent of the site’s electricity needs
- Nutrients to help grow crops in local fields
