Ronald McDonald House Charities – Our Stories
“When you support Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) you are giving families what they need the most: each other. It becomes a home away from home for families of seriously ill children to heal better together – RMHC“
As parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles we all know how stressful it is when you have a sick child, this is only compounded when your child is critically ill and needs specialized treatment in a hospital far from home.
“Our niece and her husband welcomed a beautiful baby boy last summer. It soon became apparent that something was very wrong. He was rushed to London and within hours airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Toronto. It was totally overwhelming.
Ronald McDonald House became home over the next couple months. It was one less thing to worry about, a place to rest, and a place to receive support on the tough days. They were also able to have their two older children join them from time to time which were also important. Our family will be forever grateful for the care and support our niece, her husband and family received from everyone at Ronald McDonald House-Toronto and Children’s Hospital. Take the opportunity to “pay it forward” come out for day great day of golf and boost our donation to Ronald McDonald House Charities – Toronto”

It wasn’t that long ago that our family was like any other family. We were a family that would support McHappy Day at McDonald’s in May. A family who knew that the Ronald McDonald houses were a place where families stayed when a child was ill. Our family, like any other family never thought for one minute we would become a family who needed a place to rest our head at a Ronald McDonald House. In a matter of hours our life had changed. We would be forever grateful to have these houses close to Sick Kids in Toronto and London Children Hospital.
We were able to be minutes from our son. It is truly amazing when you walk through the doors of the houses. The hospitality is second to none. Almost every night a hot meal is provided to you. If you missed the meal because you were at the hospital with your child the fridge is always full of leftovers and snacks that are never ending. These places provide a way to decrease financial burden on families, provide nutrition and a comfortable sleep. Families may spend weeks, months or even years on and off using these facilities. Everywhere you look you see parents with tired eyes, the look of exhaustion that only you can compare to others there. You can although, sense relief at the same time. You watch families be families as they play in the yard. Watch families be families as they sit down for a meal together. Watch families be families, as the house becomes their home for possibly a short time, or a long time. We were like any other family that supported Ronald McDonald houses. Now, we are a family that understands the need for these resources. We are a family that knows how remarkable, homey and caring the houses are. We were a family that was able to be a family, all because the Ronald McDonald Houses were available to us when we needed them.

There have been two occasions that my family stayed over at the Ronald McDonald House in Ottawa. Both occasions were an Easter Weekends. My son has spent many weeks in an out of the hospital usually for two to three weeks at a time. The longest admission was ten weeks. Since one parent is allowed to stay overnight with our son while he is admitted to the hospital, my husband and I would take turns so that weekend household or yard chores could be maintained. It was so nice to be able to stay together as a family on Easter weekends. The Ronald McDonald House was festively decorated, a supper meal was provided by a group of ladies from a local church. The relief of not having to prepare a feast and having the family close during the holiday was a gift. Thank you Ronald McDonald House and all those who support this great cause
